The Beijing Flu

Hey all,

This won't be a long entry as I'm not feeling 100%. I'm barely feeling 15%.

I've seemingly got a pretty wicked case of bacterial gastroenteritis. Montezuma's revenge for those more familiar with the common name.

Coupled with the obvious symptom, I'm running a fairly significant fever, have chills and hot spats and am nauseous to the point of not eating.

I have some nuke-tastic antibiotics that my doctor prescribed for just this eventuality, but I'm going to give the other drugs some times to work before I use up one of my two doses.

Just running on no sleep right now and feeling a little crummy since yesterday afternoon. Been confined to my room, as I'm not sure running around Beijing on a Saturday is going to do me any favors.

I, like all men, hate being sick.

Hope you're all well in the land of filtered/treated water.

Nathan

P.S.: Mayan, now would be a great time for you to pay me back for all the times I brought YOU ice cream when you were sick.

Wow man. you are sick? so weird. you know, I never really got too sick in Taiwan... I had the ocasional indigestion but i still functioned. the only bad thing i got was migrains ...but that was from Canadian Fiber Pills which apparently have some substance im alergic to.
hey man, I know its hard in a new country to go out and meet people. id say for about 5 - 7 days i was the same in Taiwan. hid in my dorms/hotel, just going to 7-11s eating foods... everyone is different but i think you will eventually get so fed up with staying indoors that you will just force yourself to try the new things and force yourself to find new people. haha. Its the only way that its going to get you your language, i guess. Yeah, everyone is social and everyone gets really lonely... at least you have found some sort of communication right away though
so hey, do they teach chinese in english or chinese there?
you get better quick man. flu sucks

Sorry to hear you're feeling so crappy Nate. As to being mentally down, I suspect more than anything it's lack of structure; I bet when classes start and you have somewhere to go, things to do every day, you'll feel more like talking to people and stuff. I have the same problem socially. Asking to hang out with someone I don't know well is almost as awkward sometimes as asking somebody out. :P

And suddenly being the odd one out of a couple billion is obviously not the easiest feeling too, I can imagine.

I don't know what to tell you man. I think once school starts, though, you'll feel a lot better. Just try to be as gregarious as you can.

As to Montezuma's revenge, what do you think you got it from?

If it's water, I recommend getting chlorination tablets or something. All through the West Coast Trail we drank piss-coloured creek water treated with them, and didn't have any problems at all.

Get better!
